HISTORY OF THE CAR AFTER FIRST TEAM
In 1986 Paul DePirro drove the car one time at the IMSA Road America 500 mile
race, finishing 28th overall and 5th in GTO. In 1987 he sold the car to Raymond
Irwin (owner of Blackhawk Farms and Heartland Park Topeka race tracks) who
club raced the car for two years. In 1990 he took the car to Sebring for the
12 hour race as a customer car for Craig Carter, Andy Petery, Les Delano and
himself. Craig Carter was not happy with the level of prep on the car and
they withdrew the entry prior to qualifying.
In late 1990 Raymond Irwin had the car re-bodied as an Oldsmobile
Cutlass, which he claims was the first Oldsmobile bodied car to run in IMSA.
In 1991 the car was entered in the SunTrust 24 Hours of Daytona with Boris
Said III, Lou Giglotti, Mike Nolan, Peter Cunningham and Roger Schram as drivers.
Boris Said qualified the car 19th overall, 3rd in GTO. They finished the race
25th overall and 7th in GTO.
After the Daytona race, Boris Said used the car to qualify for the 1991 SCCA
Runoffs and he also used the car in the testing and development of the BF
Goodrich radial race tires. The car went through a series of owners before
being re-purchased by Raymond Irwin in 2004; it was club raced as a GT1 car
until 2007.
CONDITION WHEN RETIRED (OR FOUND)
I purchased the car from Raymond Irwin in April 2007; Raymond
was using the car as a rental at his Auto Concepts, Inc. race shop in the
Blackhawk Farms race track. The car was in turn key condition having been
refurbished the prior year. When I picked up the car, Paul DePirro (the original
owner and driver) was there to help load the car and it gave me an opportunity
to discuss the history of the car. According to Paul the car has not been
materially changed since it was built other than the Oldsmobile bodywork.
The frame, suspension and interior tin work are original to the car.
The car is currently undergoing restoration to its 1991 Daytona livery and I expect work to be completed by late summer 2008. I plan to “debut” the car at the September SVRA race at
